DAY OF SURGERY CHECKLIST

Day of Surgery Checklist

Thank you for selecting Midwest Veterinary Surgery (MVS) for your concierge surgical needs. Please use this checklist to help guide you and your team through setting up for a procedure with MVS. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns as they arise.

Check-In:
All surgery patients should be admitted first thing in the morning. Please make sure you’re allotting staff enough time to for the surgical patient to be admitted to the hospital, an IV catheter to be placed, and for drugs to be calculated and prepared before we arrive for surgery. Radiographs and appropriate bloodwork should be done prior to the morning of surgery. Skin should be checked and clear of signs of infection 2-4 days prior to surgery.

Patient Intake Checklist:

Confirm surgery to be performed & surgical site(s)
Confirm correct MVS Surgical Release Form is completed and signed
Confirm owner telephone #
Record the last time any medications were given

Pre-Op Checklist:

Radiographs (if applicable) readily available for viewing and measurements
Current bloodwork
Patient ID card/file readily available
IV Catheter placed
Leak check ET tubes
Clippers with a clean #40 blade & Kool Lube
Vetwrap
Surgical scrub
Vacuum
Calculate fluid rate for surgery o Canine: 5ml/kg/hr o Feline: 3ml/kg/hr
Prepare drugs: Pre-meds, Pre- & Intra-op Cefazolin (22mg/kg IV q90mins), analgesics, & NSAID
Give pre-med at appropriate time

OR Checklist:

Leak check and set up anesthetic machine(s)
Cap/mask for anesthetist
IV Fluids and IV pump for surgery
Heat support for patient before, during, and after surgery
1L bag of LRS of 0.9% NaCl for surgical lavage
1 roll of tape
IV pole
3-5 large Towels

Post-Op Checklist:

Post-op radiographs (if applicable)
E-collar on patient
Post-op Drugs
Clean OR: Sweep/Mop floors & under the surgery table - Wipe down/dust all surfaces---including overhead lights
